Falling further down the rabbit hole, I found out that there are different types of web hosting services. I thought it was pretty straightforward; you either hosted it for free on a website builder like Wix or Weebly, or you paid for these services and had complete control over the server. While these are both types of web hosting sites, there are two additional types of web hosting sites. Web hosting sites fall into four categories: free hosting, shared hosting, dedicated hosting, and collocated hosting. Free hosting is when the server usually completely owns your domain (so you can’t transfer domains to another server), and there are usually many advertisements. Shared hosting is when you and many other users pay to share a server. Dedicated housing is when a server is all for your website. Collocated housing is when you buy a web server and simply store it at a web host’s facilities. For my current needs, I see myself venturing no further than either free hosting or shared hosting. Computer servers are expensive, and I can’t think of any reason why I would be needing one in the near future.
